Chapter 70: Pink Lord and Another Second-Tier
Standing right behind Saul, Keli swiftly pinched his back.
“Hiss…”
A sharp but subtle intake of breath.
Saul knew Keli was reminding him to be cautious with his response.
If he was too reserved, they might see it as humility and forcibly pull him into the group; if he was too firm, he might offend Luo Kai in front of everyone.
In an instant, Saul’s mind flashed through three or four different ways to refuse.
Thanks to his diary’s long-term training, he immediately picked the most appropriate one.
Just as Saul was about to speak, a deep, hoarse voice sounded from behind the crowd.
“The test is over. Disperse. What are you all gathering here for? Have nothing better to do?”
Everyone turned around in a hurry—it was Mentor Kaz.
Weren’t the mentors supposed to be busy?
Luo Kai’s eye twitched.
Kaz’s gaze passed over the group of white mushrooms, landing on Saul in the center.
“Saul, come with me.”
“Yes, Mentor!” Saul responded loudly. As he passed Luo Kai, he gave an apologetic smile before quickly leaving.
The two of them walked side by side toward the sloped passageway leading to the tenth floor. Then, Kaz turned and led Saul further up.
They kept walking, past the fifteenth floor, until they reached the sixteenth.
Saul’s eyelids twitched.
The sixteenth and seventeenth floors were the mentors’ living quarters!
Saul had only ever been to the fifteenth floor—Kaz’s laboratory.
“Mentor, where are we going?” Saul had a vague guess. Could it be that since he ranked first in the test, Kaz was taking him to see Pink Lord?
“We’re going to meet a mentor. You probably haven’t seen him before—Rum, the mentor specializing in Water and Light magic.”
What?!
Saul’s heart immediately stopped.
They say that after beating the young ones, the old ones come knocking.
He had just learned Rum’s name, and the man was already here?
“Mentor, why are we meeting Mentor Rum?” Saul asked carefully.
“What do you think?” Kaz didn’t even look back.
Saul glanced at Kaz’s aged figure.
Could it be that Kaz was proactively mediating on his behalf to prevent future retaliation from Rum?
Or… was Pink Lord behind this?
So when Pink Lord said, “You’re strong enough,” did he really mean, “Go ahead, I’ve got your back”?
As he pieced it together, Saul’s heart started pounding again, a surge of unfamiliar boldness rising within him.
As they turned a corner on the ramp, just as Saul was about to follow Kaz onto the sixteenth floor, two figures suddenly descended from the upper level.
Kaz and Saul stopped at the intersection.
Leading the way was a strikingly valiant woman with shoulder-length golden hair, appearing in her late twenties.
She wore half-body armor adorned with intertwining gold and white patterns, a court rapier at her waist, and long boots with metal-toe caps.
Saul keenly noticed Kaz flinching slightly as she approached.
An old acquaintance? A rival?
Before Saul could think further, the second figure became fully visible.
He was cloaked in a brownish-red robe, with his hood pulled low, revealing only a pink chin.
The rest of his body was concealed under the cloak, except for occasional glimpses of black shoes as he walked.
A pink chin…
Saul instantly realized who the second person was!
His first reaction was to lower his head, step aside, and even subtly shift behind Kaz.
Kaz, too, cooperated, blocking half of Saul’s body.
As the two approached, Kaz bowed deeply.
“Tower Master, Lady Kira.”
For a true wizard to bow at a ninety-degree angle, the person being addressed had to be at least a second-tier wizard or someone of equal standing.
Saul followed suit with a deep bow.
He originally planned to remain bowed until they passed, but the metal-tipped boots stopped right in front of Kaz.
“All these years, and you haven’t made a bit of progress,” the woman’s voice was hoarse. “Have you even been trying?”
This time, Saul clearly saw Kaz’s arm tremble slightly.
His mentor… was afraid.
Standing right next to Kaz, Saul felt no oppressive aura. He pressed his chin tightly to his collar.
In the silent corridor, he then heard a chuckle from the person behind the woman.
“Kira, you’re meddling too much,” the Tower Master said.
That voice—it really was Pink Lord!
Saul maintained his respectful posture but was internally wondering, 'So Pinky is actually the Tower Master! Can he see the vengeful spirit attached to me? Will he help me?'
Still, Saul controlled himself, keeping still. “I’ll wait and see what the Tower Master says. If Byron can’t exorcise the spirit, then I’ll…”
Kaz clearly held the Tower Master in high regard, while Saul, on the surface, wasn’t even qualified to speak.
But Kira was different.
She tossed her head back, glaring at the Tower Master. “All these years, and you’ve made no progress at all! Gorsa, I’ve reached the second tier. Once I catch up to you, I’ll take her away.”
The Tower Master, Gorsa, didn’t seem upset. He casually stepped around Kira, leaving only a light remark.
“Try catching up first.”
Kira snorted coldly, quickly following, and soon, the two figures disappeared around the bend.
Kaz finally straightened up, his chest noticeably rising and falling.
Saul turned to look in the direction they had left, then slowly straightened his own back.
“Mentor, so that was the Tower Master… That’s my first time seeing him.”
Kaz, now composed, glanced at Saul meaningfully. “Yes, most people rarely see the Tower Master. Let’s go.”
Saul wanted to ask who that woman was, but he figured Kaz wouldn’t answer.
They continued deeper into the sixteenth floor.
Halfway there, Kaz suddenly stopped and lowered his voice.
“If you ever encounter the Tower Master, always maintain absolute respect. Don’t mistake his gentle demeanor for weakness. You must understand—he doesn’t lose his temper because he doesn’t need to, not because he can’t.”
“Kaz is warning me!” Saul instantly realized.
Kaz definitely knew something about Pink Lord—or at least a portion of it.
Pink Lord was the Tower Master.
From now on, Saul would have to refer to him as such.
“I understand. Thank you, Mentor,” Saul replied softly.
Kaz seemed satisfied with Saul’s serious attitude.
The mentors' quarters occupied two floors of the tower.
Even though the tower’s upper levels were smaller in space, the rooms were still quite large.
Despite being the mentors' living area, the sixteenth-floor corridors weren’t lavishly decorated; even the placement of candle lamps was the same as in the servant quarters.
Saul had expected to see some rare sigils or magic arrays here, but instead, it was as clean and plain as his dormitory.
They continued forward until Kaz stopped in front of a massive three-meter-wide door.
The sheer width nearly matched the entire corridor, so instead of a regular door, it was a folding one.
"Someone who needs a door like this must be huge… Could Mentor Rum be a fat giant?" Saul mused.
Besides Kaz and Saul, three other people stood by the folding door.
They were all strikingly handsome with golden hair and blue eyes, wearing identical robes with second-tier apprentice badges in the same position on their chests.
As Kaz approached, the three turned simultaneously, bowed at the exact same angle and speed, and greeted him in perfect unison.
Kaz only nodded slightly.
The three then straightened and turned back in unison, standing silently.
