Chapter 139: Knowledge Changes Fate
Morton knew that his state was actually chaotic.
In the soul storm, it was difficult for him to maintain even a brief moment of rationality. He was constantly being shattered, reformed, shattered again, and then fused back together.
It wasn't until he instinctively devoured many soul fragments that he slowly regained his own consciousness and remembered who he was.
Even so, having lost part of his soul, Morton would frequently fall into confusion, constantly having to wrestle with other consciousnesses for control of his spiritual body.
It wasn’t until he unexpectedly entered this boy’s body that the interference from the other consciousnesses was suddenly weakened, allowing him to remain lucid for long periods.
If he could never recover his missing soul, it would mean he would never regain his full sanity.
Once this body died and decayed, Morton would return to chaos, never to be conscious again!
“Hmph, underground, no matter what tricks you try, they are useless. But if I find out you’ve deceived me, I will make you die a horrible death!”
After saying this, Morton turned his gaze toward Wright, who was lying on the ground, too afraid to move, his eyes filled with murderous intent.
Byron noticed this and quickly intervened, “Lord Morton, this person is also an apprentice of our Wizard Tower. You can have him come along with us; we need helpers to draw the magic array.”
Wright immediately looked at Byron’s illusion with teary eyes. He hadn’t expected that, even at this moment, Byron would save his life.
Morton snorted coldly but didn’t actually make a move.
Seeing that Morton had agreed to come along, Byron extinguished the illusion stone in his hand.
The azure stone instantly dimmed and shattered, rendered completely useless.
Byron touched his throat—he felt like he had never spoken so much in his life. His voice was extremely strained.
Nick, who had been standing beside Byron all along, hesitated before speaking, “Senior Byron, the mission you just mentioned… was all of it true?”
Byron glanced at him. “I made it up.”
Nick was stunned. He struggled to suppress his emotions—now was not the time to be too shocked.
But he couldn’t help but admire Byron.
Byron had the guts to fabricate a lie on the spot and even managed to fool the Wraith.
Wraiths were chaotic in consciousness and not very intelligent, but they were experienced and wouldn’t be easily deceived.
Yet Byron had spoken so convincingly that even Nick almost believed him.
All that about the Kerma family, Lady Yura, political marriages, and the Western Pact…
Byron had made it all sound so real.
“The mission was made up, but everything else was true. Before coming here, I studied the history of Hanging Valley many times just in case. I just didn’t expect it to come in handy here.” Byron sighed and stopped explaining. “Get to work. Stick to the plan.”
Nick lowered his head, looking at the device he was holding. “Will this really be able to save Saul? He’s been possessed for so long—what if his consciousness is already gone?”
Byron paused for a moment before replying in a low voice, “We’ll do our best. If it doesn’t work… he dies, and we run.”
Nick wasn’t sure if Byron truly meant that, but he knew that when Morton was fusing souls, he would have to focus all his energy, leaving him unable to pay attention to the outside world.
If something went wrong with the plan, they would have a chance to escape.
That was also why Nick had agreed to be part of this plan.
If there was a high chance of getting out safely, he was willing to do his part to help Saul.
As Byron and Nick made their preparations, Morton was already striding toward the underground soul storm.
Behind him, stumbling along, was Wright.
Saul sat atop the diary, watching as the Wraith’s strides grew longer and faster, realizing that the Wraith wasn’t as composed as he appeared.
It seemed Morton fully understood the consequences of a fragmented soul.
But what kind of trap had Byron set up there that made him confident he could face an Wraith head-on?
Saul had almost been fooled by Byron too, but in the end, he realized—there was no such person as Lady Yura in the tower. Even if there were a hidden mission, it should have been issued by the Tower Master.
And if Byron had such a deep connection with the Tower Master Gorsa, he wouldn’t have nearly been expelled from the Wizard Tower at the age of thirty.
Saul still didn’t quite understand why Byron had given up the chance to escape quietly and instead revealed himself to lure the Wraith over.
“Could it be that Senior Byron knows I’m still alive?”
Sitting on the diary, Saul stroked his chin, pondering Byron’s intentions.
“I can’t determine that for now, but if Byron really helps Morton fuse his missing soul, it’ll definitely be bad for me. Should I take back my body now?”
Saul looked at his own body’s hands, now filled with spiritual bodies. The various consciousnesses Morton had absorbed were still struggling within his mental space.
It was unfortunate that he hadn’t been able to absorb Wright’s consciousness as well. But if Saul initiated a battle for control now, the vengeful spirits Morton had killed would certainly cause him trouble too.
Just as he thought of this, words suddenly appeared on the diary, warning Saul that the timing was not yet right.
“The timing isn’t right… is it still too soon? Or is there something I haven’t considered?”
Although the diary had warned him, Saul, in his spiritual form, wasn’t particularly frightened.
While the Wraith was still on the move, he lowered his head and continued calculating the variables of an awareness battle, analyzing the factors and success rates.
Since the Wraith was controlling Saul’s body, his movement speed wasn’t particularly fast.
Although he could have abandoned Saul’s body and rushed ahead, clearly, the ability to walk in sunWright was something the Wraith wasn’t willing to give up.
With a head full of questions, Saul followed the Wraith as they finally approached the cave where the soul storm was located.
Two ghosts and one human passed through an extremely narrow passage and entered a vast space.
In fact, calling it vast was an understatement.
At the center of the cave’s floor was a bottomless rift, so dark that even fireWright couldn’t illuminate it.
Suspended above the rift was a small whirlwind, no more than a meter in diameter.
The whirlwind was gray-white, containing no stones or dirt. Though it appeared powerful, it didn’t stir even a single grain of sand on the ground.
The wind howled, carrying eerie whispers and wails that made one's ears ring and head spin.
Occasionally, a human face or a hand would emerge, struggling to escape the storm, only to be swiftly dragged back in.
Morton stopped at the edge of the rift, looking at the soul storm with apprehension in his eyes.
Countless souls had been trapped in this storm.
Morton himself had been tormented inside for a long time.
If not for his missing soul, he would never have wanted to return to this place.
After staring at the soul storm for a moment, Morton confirmed that Byron hadn’t lied about it.
The storm was indeed unstable now, with broken soul fragments gradually escaping its pull.
If the storm fully collapsed, Morton’s lost soul would be blasted into unknown depths underground by the final explosion.
Shifting his gaze, Morton looked at Byron.
Byron was no longer an illusion. Seeing Morton looking over, he immediately bowed with an even more respectful expression.
Beside Byron stood a man with a blank expression, bowing alongside him.
Saul recognized him—it was Nick, who had been unconscious for a long time.
Wright, having finally caught up, struggled over to stand next to Nick.
Seeing Wright’s disheveled state, Nick’s eyes flickered, but he showed no other reaction.
In front of Nick, a set of experimental equipment was laid out.
Saul noticed that among them was a small electromagnetic induction device.
It had only part of the function of an electromagnetic chair, but it was highly portable.
Morton glanced around, then stepped up to the equipment. “So, this is how you plan to help me find my missing soul? With this pile of junk?”
