Chapter 175: Unexpected Incidents

Saul was actually more anxious than Ferguson.

He had experienced a scene of being surrounded by corpses before and knew that as long as no taboos were violated, there was generally no danger.

What unsettled him was how these corpses had managed to reach the warehouse entrance.

Had the warehouse's taboos failed, or had he made a mistake in his work?

Before figuring out the truth, he decided to stay still if the enemy did not move.

Saul pretended to be just another corpse among the crowd, silently watching Ferguson.

Little did Saul know, in those brief seconds, Ferguson had gone through hell.

Ferguson had just been about to escape with the red candle when suddenly, a massive axe descended from above, cleaving his head in two.

The next moment, he found himself back in the dark corridor, standing once more.

He realized that everything just now had been an illusion.

Before he could react, the ground beneath him turned into a swamp. No matter how he struggled, he couldn't escape. In the end, he was submerged, with mud filling his mouth and nose until it covered his head.

Just as he was about to suffocate, Ferguson woke up again.

But then, he was stabbed through the heart by a sharp blade, devoured alive by countless insects, lost endlessly in the darkness...

He experienced death in countless ways. Each time he finally returned to reality, he was quickly dragged back into the abyss.

Just as he was on the verge of madness, a white current of electricity suddenly burst forth, enveloping his entire body.

“No!!”

Ferguson's eyes snapped wide open, and his consciousness finally returned to reality.

Seeing the countless pale faces now inches away, he immediately swung his arms. The white electricity surrounding him gathered into two long whips in his hands.

He flicked his wrists, and the electrical whips lashed at the corpses.

The powerful electric field instantly dispelled the illusions created by the corpses.

However, the terrifying, crackling whips left only charred marks on the corpses, unable to force them back even a single step.

While attacking, Ferguson accidentally dropped the box containing the red candle. It rolled out, its white flame flickering upward but remaining steadily lit.

As he moved, Ferguson accidentally kicked the candle.

It rolled into a corner, immediately drawing all the corpses' attention.

Ferguson suddenly realized—the candle was the cause of the corpses' strange behavior!

“Saul!” He turned toward the boy hidden among the corpses, enraged, and even lashed out at him with his electric whip.

Seeing the glowing white lightning coming straight at him, Saul felt his hair stand on end.

He quickly sidestepped, ducking behind a nearby corpse.

Snap!

The corpse took the hit for Saul, but the electric current that passed through it still left him momentarily paralyzed.

“Ferguson, this was an accident! Who knew lighting the candle outside would cause this?”

As he spoke, Saul ran toward the candle. If he could extinguish it, the corpses should return to normal.

Ferguson had no idea what Saul was trying to do, but seeing him rushing toward the candle, his first instinct was: He's trying to steal it!

No longer caring if the intense battle would further provoke the corpses, Ferguson lashed out with his thick whips like venomous snakes baring their fangs at Saul.

Saul weaved through the corpses like a shopper squeezing through a crowded marketplace.

A bolt of lightning struck just ahead of him. Though most of it was blocked by the surrounding corpses, the residual current still left him momentarily numb.

The next second, a transparent barrier enveloped Saul, cutting him off from the electricity.

“Ferguson, are you trying to kill me?” If he hadn’t activated a Spirit Armor Scroll at the last moment, he would have been seriously injured.

Ferguson's electricity was a major weakness in Saul’s magic system, one he had yet to overcome. If he had already reforged his Spirit Grease, his arm would have melted in this fight.

“As long as you don’t act rashly.” Seeing Saul trapped inside the Spirit Armor, Ferguson calmed down.

Cautiously, he navigated through the corpses, trying to retrieve the candle from the corner.

Electric sparks continued to flicker around him, preventing any further illusions from taking hold.

A high concentration of electric arcs surged through his lower body, causing his facial muscles to twitch with every step.

It looked painful.

Yet, rather than slow down, Ferguson sped up, his gaze on the candle becoming more intense.

He knew that the candles from Warehouse Two were extremely valuable, but he hadn’t realized they could also summon the warehouse's corpses.

Now, he didn’t want to hand this candle over to Kujin anymore!

If used properly, it might be his ticket to a complete turnaround!

He also noticed that after their initial attack on his mind, the corpses had only been fixated on the candle.

So he stopped wasting energy attacking them and instead focused on clearing a path.

He tried using Mage Hand to grab the candle remotely, but the spectral hand was slowly absorbed as it passed through the corpses, leaving only a single finger by the time it reached the candle.

As Ferguson cautiously approached the candle, the Spirit Armor around Saul finally dissipated.

Instead of moving toward the candle, Saul retreated to the edge of the bronze door.

Seeing Saul voluntarily move away, Ferguson smirked inwardly. At least he knows his place! That little bastard caused me so much embarrassment—he even forced my locator to activate. Once I get the candle, I’ll make sure to teach him a lesson!

At that moment, Ferguson completely forgot that he was the one who insisted on lighting the candle in the first place.

Just as he was about to reach the candle—only two rows of corpses away—a black tendril, as thick as a finger, snaked its way through the gaps between the corpses, grabbed the candle, and swiftly pulled it away!

Ferguson’s face changed. “A Soul-Devouring Claw tentacle?!”

He wasn’t afraid of the tendril itself, but it was extremely agile and slender. The moment it got the candle, it slipped back through the corpses, shifting them out of place.

In the blink of an eye, the candle was gone!

Ferguson turned his head and saw the other end of the tendril was connected to Saul!

“Knew it was you, you little snake!”

He wanted to fry Saul into charcoal on the spot.

But the candle was now closer to him, so Ferguson prioritized reclaiming it.

Abandoning caution, he leaped forward, pushing through the corpses with his bare hands like a spring-loaded machine.

However, just as he was mid-air, another black tendril emerged from the ground and sneakily tripped him.

Ferguson immediately swung his whip, vaporizing the tendril.

But that brief obstruction was enough—he didn’t leap far enough.

All he could do was watch as the slippery tendril thief carried the red candle back to Saul.

Saul reached out and caught it.

Despite everything, the flame remained bright.

When he looked up, Ferguson had landed three meters away, separated by several corpses.

Ferguson glared at Saul with a dark expression. “Give me the candle.”

Pressing one hand against the metal door behind him, Saul’s expression turned serious. “Senior, this candle doesn’t seem as ordinary as you claimed. If I just hand it over, it could bring serious trouble later. This deal… I need to reconsider.”

“You’re going back on your word!” Ferguson snapped his whip in frustration.

Saul chuckled. “Or maybe you weren’t being honest?”

Ferguson clenched his fists, his knuckles cracking.

Saul hadn’t expected lighting a counterfeit candle outside the warehouse would actually lure out the corpses.

The situation had spiraled beyond his control, and he had no choice but to terminate the deal.

If this thing fell into the wrong hands, even he didn’t know what kind of disaster it could cause.

More importantly, if anything went wrong with the corpses, he would be held accountable.

This had completely backfired on him.

It was like accepting a single candy, only to be forced to pay back ten in return.

A total loss!
